What UAE Enterprises Need to Know About AI Governance in 2026

Across the UAE, enterprise adoption of AI has moved from pilot projects to core business processes faster than most governance frameworks have kept pace with. Boards that treated AI as an IT initiative eighteen months ago are now discovering it sits at the centre of customer decisions, credit assessments, hiring processes and critical infrastructure operations, with the accountability that implies.

The gap we see most often is not a lack of enthusiasm for governance, but a lack of structure. Organisations have AI use cases scattered across departments, often introduced through third-party tools rather than in-house development, with no consistent way to classify risk, assign ownership, or demonstrate oversight to a regulator, auditor or customer who asks.

A workable AI governance programme starts with three things: a risk classification model that scores AI use cases by potential harm and reversibility, not just technical complexity; a named accountability structure, typically an AI oversight committee with real authority, not a working group; and a policy suite that covers data use, model risk, vendor due diligence and human oversight in plain, enforceable language.

Increasingly, boards are aligning this work directly to ISO/IEC 42001, the international standard for AI management systems. Even where certification is not an immediate goal, the standard provides a credible, externally recognised structure to build against, one that satisfies regulators and enterprise customers who are starting to ask AI governance questions during procurement.

The organisations moving fastest are not the ones with the most advanced AI. They are the ones who treated governance as a prerequisite for scale, not an afterthought bolted on after an incident. That is the conversation we have with boards across the UAE today, not whether to govern AI, but how to do it in a way that does not slow the business down.
